Banarshihankalan

Banasrsiankalan, located at about 85 km north-west of Gorakhpur in district Maharajganj (U.P.). The cultural assemblage are scattered in an area of about 100 acres.

A small scale excavation exposed the remains of brick built stupa constructed in three phases. In the northern side a late phase rectangular pedestal (oriented in east-west direction) made of bricks has been exposed to install the image. Fragments of few sculptures in very fragile condition are also recovered near the pedestal.

A head of Bodhisattva in lime stone is noteworthy findings. Terracotta animal and human figurines, beads, mould and sealing etc. are the antiquities found from the excavation.

On the basic of pottery and antiquities the site can be dated to Sunga-Kushana period.
